Job Description
The jobs of the lift truck operator are to safely move products and supplies from one location to another. The forklift operator has the added responsibility of performing regular checks on the equipment so as to ensure it can safely perform the required task.
Personal Qualities
It is necessary for a forklift driver to have basic reading and writing skills. Additionally, the forklift driver should be physically fit and could comfortably carry 30 pounds. They must be physically able to use a forklift; thus, they need the physical ability of using both feet, both arms and both hands. The operator of the forklift should ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In nearly all work environments, they would be entitled to a half-hour lunch break and two short coffee breaks during the day. It is very important that the driver of the forklift not be prone to reckless driving or rage of any kind.
Training
Lift truck training is often done on the job. Training will often include safety and control training, which could be completed in various ways. These could include videos, lectures and testing. A performance test would also be conducted on the forklift. After the tests have been successfully done, a license can be issued. This license needs to be renewed based on state and provincial laws and according to shop procedures. If you get the chance to complete your forklift training on the job, it is a great idea and it is one more skill you can add to your resume.
Job Locations
Many forklift operators work in the warehouse department of retail or manufacturing facilities. A lot of lift truck drivers work in different fields depending on the needs of the individual and the company they work for. Forklifts are extremely versatile pieces of machinery which can be found on both construction sites and logging sites along with in most ports, train yards and receiving and shipping facilities.
