Classifications of Scissor Lifts & Aerial Lift Platforms
Scissor lifts consist of a series of crisscrossed steel arms, connected to make an X pattern. When the crisscrossed arms are extended, the platform is vertically raised. There are support railings along the edges of the lifting mechanism to be able to help secure the workers' tools and keep them safe.
The scissor lift has a low profile, best used for smooth surfaces like pavement, hard dirt surfaces and concrete. These equipment utilize either a combustion engine or electric motor in order to move the lift and power the lifting apparatus. The operator would have to move the lift itself if she or he needs to travel horizontally, because the lift mechanism only operates the lift vertically.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lift
The standard scissor lift and the rough terrain scissor lift use the same lifting technology. The main difference is that the rough terrain units feature a different base which is specifically made for surfaces that are not even. These units also provide oversized all terrain tires and higher ground clearance. The rough terrain scissor lifts use 4-wheel drive in order to navigate through difficult and muddy terrain easily.
Telescopic Boom Lift
The telescopic boom lift utilizes a telescoping beam which elevates both vertically and diagonally. This particular unit has a small work platform which houses controls in order to operate the boom. The controls function with a combustion engine in order to power the hydraulics that move the lift and power the boom. The telescopic boom lift is an independent lift unit and has off-road capable tires.
Articulating Boom Lift
The articulating boom lift features 2 telescopic booms that are attached with a moving elbow apparatus. This lifting machinery has a small work platform or a bucket which is outfitted with hand controls in order to control the boom. These are stand-alone lifts which are powered by a combustion engine. Articulating boom lifts are available with either hard surface or off-road tires. These lifts are made to be able to reach on top of and over top of buildings.
Aerial Mast Lift
The aerial mast lift uses a telescopic mast so as to raise a work platform vertically into the air. Normally, these lifts are pneumatic powered or electrically powered and are self-propelled equipment. These machines offer a great solution for working in high racks in narrow warehouse aisles. It is very vital to note that aerial mast lifts are limited to vertical movement and are not recommended for off-road use.
